Bounds on Spearman’s rho when at least one random variable is discrete

چکیده
Spearman’s rho is one of the most popular dependence measures used in practice to describe association between two random variables. However, case at least variable being discrete, correlations are often bounded and restricted a sub-interval $$[-1,1]$$ . Hence, small positive values may actually support strong when getting close its highest attainable value. Similarly, slight negative can mean dependence. In this paper, we derive best-possible upper lower bounds for discrete. We illustrate obtained some situations practical relevance.

Bounds & Asymptotic Approximations for Utility Prices When Volatility Is Random
This paper is a contribution to the valuation of derivative securities in a stochastic volatility framework, which is a central problem in financial mathematics. The derivatives to be priced are of European type with the payoff depending on both the stock and the volatility. The valuation approach uses utility-based criteria under the assumption of exponential risk preferences. This methodology...
متن کامل“At least one” caching
We consider a variant of the caching problem, where each request is a set of pages of a fixed size, instead of a single page. In order to serve such a request, we require at least one of those pages to be present in the cache. Each page is assumed to have unit size and unit cost for getting loaded into the cache. We prove lower bounds on the competitive ratio for this problem in both the determ...
متن کاملIT Does Matter (At Least When It Is Properly Managed)
The works of (Ackoff, 1967), (Dearden, 1972), and more recently (Carr, 2003) argue that IT is becoming a commodity. From their perspective, IT is not so much a source of competitive advantage, but more of a mundane requirement of the environment similar to electrical service and other utilities. Carr presents several compelling arguments to support his commodity view of IT. We feel that such a ...
متن کاملEstimating Equations with Information Loss on at Least One Dependent Variable
Efficient, or joint, estimation of a pair of linear equations wi th the same explanatory variables reduces to separate estimation of each equation. This is no longer the case i f infor mation has been lost on at least one dependent variable; for example, i f all that is recorded is whether some value is exceeded or not, or i f information has been lost completely. This paper considers a class ...
متن کاملWhen action is not least
We examine the nature of the stationary character of the Hamilton action S for a space-time trajectory worldline x t of a single particle moving in one dimension with a general time-dependent potential energy function U x , t . We show that the action is a local minimum for sufficiently short worldlines for all potentials and for worldlines of any length in some potentials. For long enough worl...
